What Exactly Is Horsepower?

Horsepower is a term that has forever been used when describing the power of the vehicle that you are looking at. But what exactly does this really mean, and how was that term coined?

The term was first coined by James Watt back in the late 18th century as a way to sell steam engines to prospective customers. He came up with this by figuring that a mill-horse could push 33 pound-feet in one minute, and he then applied that to the power rating of the steam engines that he was selling. The term stuck and we have been using it to describe engine power since.
