How Differentials Function: What You Should Know

As a vehicle owner, it is normal to want to keep your car in excellent condition, but it can be overwhelming understanding the many components that help your vehicle function properly. At Zeigler Maserati of Grandville, we can help.

Have you heard of a differential? It is a gearbox that is housed between the drive wheels. Vehicles that are equipped with a four-wheel drive system usually have a front and rear differential. A differential and transmission work together to transfer power from the engine to the axle that turns the wheels of your vehicle. It also helps your vehicle turn. When you make a turn, the outside wheels have to rotate faster than the inside wheels, and a differential uses different gears to allow each side to rotate at different speeds.

A differential uses lubricating oil to move heat away from the gears, and it is important to have this fluid changed routinely because it breaks down over time. When you don't have your differential's lubricating oil changed, it can cause grinding that can lead to expensive repairs.
