The Brake System: What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that is used to apply force to the brake pistons inside each brake caliper, that is made from either glycol or silicone, depending on the age of your car. When you apply your foot to the brake, what you are actually doing is moving brake fluid through the brake lines to apply pressure to the brake pistons. This presses the brake pads into the spinning brake discs, allowing the vehicle to stop.

Because brake fluid corrodes over time by absorbing moisture from the air, it is important to flush the old brake fluid out and replace it with new fluid from time to time. So if your brakes are feeling abnormal (squishy, hard to press, etc.) then it's probably time you brought your car to Zeigler Maserati of Grandville to have us perform brake service on your automobile. Remember, without brake fluid, you can't stop the car, so it's very important that you keep this system immaculate!
